BECOMING AN ATHLETE
Special Olympics helps athletes to gain confidence, discipline and self-esteem which carries into your daily
life at home, school and work.

Eligibility & Procedures

Athletes who have been identified as having an intellectual disability may begin to train with Special
Olympics at age 6, and begin competing at 8 years of age.  Athletes must agree to observe the rules of
Special Olympics.

  • All athletes must have a current medical on file with the state which acts as the application for
      participation.  A copy of the Medical must be available to the coaches for the athlete's chosen
      sports during any training or competition.


  • The Medical requires the signature of a medical doctor and the parent or guardian.

  • The Medical must be renewed every three years.

  • The Athlete must agree to participate according to the Special Olympics Code of Conduct.

"LET ME WIN, BUT IF I CANNOT WIN, LET ME BE BRAVE IN THE ATTEMPT."
